7 – Professor John Howie

A retired professor of general practice, Professor John Howie led the University of Edinburgh's trailblazing department of general practice from 1981 to 2000, where he led research on epidemiology and public health.

He is well known for his research into the links between personal continuity and the quality of GP consultations, regarded as hugely influential in demonstrating the importance of the nature and quality of the patient-doctor relationship.
