Accountable Officer

GP Commissioning Consortia must have an accountable officer who can be held responsible by the NHS Commissioning Board - and by the consortium - for the consortium´s performance. The accountable officer will also be responsible for financial stewardship of the commissioning budget. It is possible for one person to be accountable officer for more than one consortium. The accountable officer must be a member or employee of the consortium or of any body that is a member of the consortium. The Health and Social Care Bill provides for the Board to appoint accountable officers to consortia but it will normally be a matter for the consortium themselves.
