Avoiding the ‘referral police’

Yet again it appears the assumption is being made that high referral equals bad practice.

Call for consortia to crack down on 'unwarranted' GP variation

There are circumstances where the opposite is true. I have a relatively high referral rate for continence-related illness, because I have an interest in the area, have a higher identification rate and am more aware of treatment options. At the other end of the spectrum, I would rather that a GP with little experience in an area seek advice rather than provide inadequate treatment to avoid the referral police.
