Bacon and sausages link to bowel cancer and older mothers putting strain on midwife workforce



The British people’s love of bacon and sausages may be causing ‘thousands’ of cancer deaths each year.

Eating meat that is salted, cured or smoked has a ‘significant’ impact on a person’s risk of developing bowel cancer, a World Health Organisation report has warned.

The Times writes that after analysing more than 800 studies worldwide, the organisation said the evidence for a link was now convincing. WHO experts said the risk was small, but growing with increasing consumption.

The NHS in England is short of 2,600 midwives and the problem is being compounded by growing number of women giving birth later in life, the Royal College of Midwives has warned.

Women giving birth in their 30s and 40s require greater care from midwives and the number are at record highs, reports the Guardian.
