Cancer networks saved, and a tomato surprise

By Ellie Broughton

Our round-up of the health headlines on Friday 20 May.

There are cheers all round today for a quadriplegic patient who's made a miraculous recovery. Former basketball player Rob Summers has recovered movement in his legs thanks to epidural therapy combined with electrical stimulation of his spine.

The Telegraph has a video of Summers, the Daily Mail attributes his recovery to Christopher Reeve, and the Lancet's got the full medical details. Take your pick.

Another miraculous recovery on this side of the pond as the Guardian reports Andrew Lansley has backtracked on cuts to England's 28 NHS cancer networks. Pressure from MPs of all political persuasions has forced yet another U-turn from the health minister, leading some of us to wonder whether Lansley ought to start announcing his measures with the addendum, ‘… just kidding LOL!'.

Silly Story of the Day has again been won by the Daily Mail, who claim today that cooked tomatoes are as good as statins. Australian researchers have proposed that 2oz of tomato paste, or a pint of tomato juice, could contain enough lycopene to pose an alternative to statins. Be sure to passata that information on to your patients.
