CQUIN

The Commissioning for Quality and Innovation payment framework is effectively guidance for commissioners of health care in drawing up contracts with providers and is designed ‘to help make quality part of the commissioner-provider discussion everywhere'.

CQUIN was introduced in 2009 to ensure a proportion of providers´ income is conditional on demonstrating improvements in quality and innovation in specified areas of care. Many different models of CQUIN have developed which can be used as templates for building quality improvement into contracts.

The Government is expected to expand the CQUIN framework as part its health reforms.
