Your patients probably do not realise, but doctors are humans too.
Pulse is looking for GPs to write about their personal experiences when – for one reason or another – they find themselves on the other side of the consulting desk. Today we are launching our annual writing competition with the theme of ‘Turning Tables: what happens when doctors become patients’.
We want to hear about the times when you, or someone close to you, was affected by ill health and how this changed your opinions or approach to medicine. It can be a comedic take on the time you discovered Man Flu was real, or a more bittersweet piece on when you struggled to help a relative in need.
Perhaps you have a physical or mental health condition yourself, or you have learnt a lot after undergoing treatment or a procedure? Prose, poem or song lyrics are acceptable, and credit will be given for a story that makes us laugh or cry.
Competition winners from previous years have gone onto great things, so please get writing and submit your entries by the 26th February ***UPDATE: DEADLINE NOW EXTENDED TO 5TH MARCH***. You lose absolutely nothing by entering, and will probably deserve some CPD points at the same time.

Turning tables: How to enter
Entries should be no longer than 500 words and submitted in electronic form to editor@pulsetoday.co.uk with a portrait photograph of the writer by 28th February 2018 ***UPDATE: DEADLINE NOW EXTENDED TO 5TH MARCH***
Practising GPs or GP trainees are able to enter the competition, with the best entries published in Pulse magazine and online.
The Editor’s Prize will be awarded to the top entry who will receive a Samsung Galaxy 8Gb tablet. The best one entry from a writer aged under 35 years will also win a special prize (please state in your entry if you are in this age bracket).
Please ensure that any confidential details are changed in the piece and that any third parties are not identifiable, unless of course you have permission to publish information about them.
