DES

Introduced alongside the new GMS contract in April 2004, enhanced services plug a gap in essential services or deliver higher than specified standards, with the aim of helping PCTs reduce demand on secondary care. Directed Enhanced Services – such as the childhood immunisations programme - must be provided by PCTs for their population but practices can choose whether or not to provide them. They are used in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as well as in England.
