Tipped as a future leader of the profession, Dr Anwar is ‘one to watch’, according to the GPs that nominated him. This isn’t surprising considering the long list of impressive achievements the Leicester GP already has under his belt at the young age of 33.

Dr Anwar is the first – and youngest – GP to be appointed as an RCGP faculty chair within five years of qualification. He is one of the youngest LMC medical secretaries in the country – for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland LMC – and also among the youngest magistrates in his region.

He isn’t new to Pulse, having earned a spot in last year’s Local Heroes list. But this year has really seen Dr Anwar making waves nationally within his profession and in the media, fighting GPs’ corner and ‘providing a great voice for primary care’.

He successfully negotiated Christmas and New Year closure for practices in his area, which set a precedent for other LMCs in the country, and he was also able to give £15,000 to charity from the cash left over after all practices paid towards the associated out-of-hours cover.

And his achievements do not end there; he secured funding for primary care services for the largest asylum centre in the Midlands and implemented and piloted a seven-day working project within his local CCG, which now covers 75,000 patients.

Dr Anwar has also represented GPs in the media, welcoming the GP Forward View as a start, but calling for ‘an adequately funded and properly resourced primary care system’.

His hard work has not gone unnoticed. He received a commendation from the CQC regional lead for his role as a CQC primary care advisor and received a letter of congratulations from his local MP Sir Edward Garnier for being the voice of GPs and primary care in the media.

And who is behind his drive and success? His mum. ‘Although she is physically disabled, she is the reason for my success and she is an inspiration to us all,’ he says.

What to watch for next year: He wants to make the appraisal system ‘more fit for purpose’ and continue to fight for ‘adequate funding’ for general practice

What others say about him: ‘He is certain to be national leader of substance in the future’.
