GP notional rent under scrutiny, Chesterfield’s fire-fighting hospital and Mail’s IVF villains

The 'notional rent' that GPs receive for their surgeries has come under scrutiny this morning, with the Telegraph saying that GPs could be getting millions of pounds from the taxpayer under the scheme (not on website). The scheme has so far cost the Government more than £630 million a year, although Dr John Leonard, a GP in Falkirk, Scotland, last night labelled doctors who 'milk' the system as greedy.

Meanwhile the Sheffield Telegraph reports that medical staff at Chesterfield Hospital have battled on to ensure no operations or appointments have been cancelled, a week after a fire ripped through the main entrance to the hospital.

Finally the Daily Mail reports that two women are at the centre of an ethical row over funding. The first women, a 39-year-old British woman had £4,000 of IVF treatment after she said it was her 'human right' to receive it. The second, a Nigerian has been accused of flying to Britain to give birth to quintuplets after conceiving in Africa. She is currently fighting deportation by the Home Office and has already cost the taxpayer £200,000.
