Health and Wellbeing Board

A statutory body within a local authority charged with ‘joining up the commissioning of local NHS services, social care and health improvement'. Each will include representation from relevant GP Commissioning Consortia as well as directors of public, health, social services, childrens´ services and patient representatives.

The boards will undertake the Joint Strategic Needs Assessments and will hence have a role in influencing commissioning. They will also decide on pooled budgets between local authorities and consortia and will undertake the scrutiny role previously held by Overview and Scrutiny Committees. Under the timetable for the NHS reforms they have to be in place by April 2012.
