Let’s blow prescribing budgets

Rather than a work to rule, why do GPs not consider the widespread use of dabigatran instead of warfarin, ticagrelor instead of other antiplatelets, escitalopram rather than other SSRIs, esomeprazole as PPI of choice and so on?

This would not compromise appropriate patient care, but would have a significant impact on prescribing budgets  – more than offsetting any revenue likely to be generated by the Government's suggested pension changes.

The time to consider this is prior to April 2013, from which date the financial responsibility will belong to GP-led clinical commissioning groups.
