Protectionist culture has to stop

While whistleblowers are automatically viewed as troublemakers, governance in general practice is a charade.

Have we learned nothing from Shipman and the Francis report… and from every high-profile whistleblowing case’s formulaic pattern?

The problem is that, as doctors, we are brainwashed into the club… it is never the right thing to dob in another doctor. Surely patients have been telling us for years that this has to stop.

There has to be transparency and a culture of accepting that as humans we make mistakes and deserve support where due, but that deliberate greed or negligence, or frank malevolence or incompetence will not be tolerated. The protectionist culture has to stop.
