Responsible officer

Responsible Officers will have a key role in revalidation, making a recommendation to the GMC, usually every five years, about whether that doctor should be revalidated.  The Responsible Officer will also be responsible for ensuring that systems of clinical governance and appraisal in their organisation are working and are appropriate for revalidation. Their role is enshrined in UK legislation. Responsible Officers will be responsible for the doctors employed by or contracted to the designated body or organisation, or who have some other prescribed link, for example through membership.
