On the first working day of the year, the Guardian’s front page features a warning over Government plans for a seven-day NHS, as the BMA says the move could harm patient care.
The BMA says that the political incentive is being rolled out without sufficient funding and would therefore lead to cutbacks elsewhere in the service, such as fewer mid-week operations.

But, in a blog heavily trailed in major news outlets, leading doctor and former BMJ editor Dr Richard Smith says cancer is ‘the best way to die’ as it allows for preparation and reflection. Sky News quotes him as saying we should ‘stop wasting billions’ on trying to find a cure.
