The David Brent award for managerial excellence

This one goes to Professor Malcolm Grant, provost of University College London and the academic somewhat surprisingly tapped by health secretary Andrew Lansley to chair the new NHS Commissioning Board.

Professor Grant used his first appearance in his new role to attack Mr Lansley's health bill as ‘unintelligible', and a week later made the astonishing admission that his experience of the health service was limited as he was ‘not a patient of the NHS'.

Presumably this was a demonstration of the ‘excellent leadership skills' Mr Lansley had claimed the hapless professor possessed when he publicly backed his candidacy four days earlier.
