Given he needs the profession on board for his NHS reforms, his claim in July that GPs offered preferential treatment to dinner-party guests was perhaps not the wisest move.

But it was his later claims about the health bill that were really perplexing. Fresh from a summer of Field trips with the NHS Future Forum, Mr Cameron arrived at Prime Minister’s Questions to cheerfully declare that on the health bill ‘the whole profession is on board’, and name-checked the RCGP, Royal College of Physicians and Royal College of Nursing among his backers – much to the surprise of the organisations themselves.
