The Malcolm Tucker Omnishambles of the Year Award

Graduate_Alamy

Health Education England spectacularly mishandled GP postgraduate training this year, with the worst recruitment figures for seven years and 40% of places unfilled in some regions. HEE had to run an unprecedented third round of recruitment – which still failed to plug gaps – and delay by 12 months its target of ensuring 3,250 filled GP trainee places every year. Despite publishing a report with a list of ideas on how to boost GP places in July, HEE has yet to implement any of them. A complete mess.

Runner-up NHS England for the shambolic launch – and later reluctant delay – of the care.data scheme. Did managers really think threatening GPs who opted patients out of their data-harvesting scheme was a good idea?
