#GPnews: Hospital forced to close ward due to rescruitment problems

16:30 Bridlington Hospital has been forced to close a ward due to probelms with recruiting staff, reports the BBC.

It says this comes as the hospital has lost a number of services in recent years, including acute care and maternity wards.

York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust chief operating officer Wendy Scott said some patients ‘could be managed in a different care setting, for example at home with additional support’.

She added: ‘The continued provision of safe services on the east coast remains a priority, and this decision is a reflection of the challenging recruitment and financial constraints facing the NHS.’

The news comes as Pulse reported earlier this week that NHS Humber Foundation Trust is being forced, due to the recruitment crisis, to offer £130,000 to recruit a salaried GP for a struggling Bridlington GP practice it took over earlier this year.

13:00 The House of Commons Health Committee has launched an inquiry into how the safe and effective supply of medicines, medical devices and products will be guaranteed post-Brexit.

The committee said quitting the EU and the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom) ‘means new regulatory arrangements must be put in place from 29 March 2019 to guarantee the safe and effective supply of medicines, medical devices, medical products and substances of human origin in the UK’.

It added: ‘Patients, the NHS and the UK’s life science industry need certainty about what the UK’s regulatory arrangements will be after Brexit and a smooth transition towards them. There are also major implications for the future of medical research and development.’

09:30 Official NHS stop smoking campaign ‘Stoptober’ is backing participants to use e-cigarettes for the first time.

This will see e-cigarettes featuring in the TV advert as a smoking aid, reports the BBC.

Draft NICE guidelines say patients should be informed others have found them helpful when quitting cigarettes.
