Over 80% of patients had ‘good’ GP  experience during pandemic

More than eight in ten patients (83%) had an overall ‘good’ experience of their GP practice this year, the NHS’s latest GP patient survey has revealed.

This year’s figures, published this month but covering January to March 2021, showed GPs have maintained patient satisfaction levels similar to before the pandemic, when 82% reported a ‘good’ overall experience in 2020.

The figures for 2021 also showed that 82% were ‘satisfied with the appointment offered, and accepted it’ – up from 65% in 2020, before the pandemic hit.

A total of 71% said they had a ‘good experience of making an appointment’, compared with 66% in 2020 – and with 68% agreeing they found it ‘easy to get through to their practice by phone’.

It comes as NHS England has said GPs are delivering ‘well beyond’ pre-pandemic activity levels and are busier than ever – at the same time as it prepares to introduce a target on GP appointments.

The annual survey, conducted by Ipsos MORI on behalf of NHS England since 2007, polled 850,000 patients in England.

The survey also revealed that:

  • 47% of patients received a phone appointment when they last tried to make an appointment, up from 10% in 2020
  • 48% were seen in person, down from 85% in 2020
  • 3% had an online appointment, compared with less than 0.5% last year
  • 3% were seen at another practice location, compared with 4% last year
  • Less than 0.5% had a home visit, compared with 1% in 2020
  • 59% saw or spoke to someone ‘at a time they wanted to or sooner’ 
  • 60% who wanted a same day appointment got one
  • 96% said they ‘have confidence and trust in the healthcare professional they saw’ 
  • 94% said ‘their needs were met at their last appointment’

However, while 80% of patients said they had needed a GP appointment in the last 12 months, 42% of these patients said they had ‘avoided’ making one, in most cases to protect the NHS or because they were worried about catching Covid.

Ipsos MORI said that the effects of the Covid pandemic taking place during the survey ‘should be taken into account when looking at results over time’.

Beccy Baird, senior fellow at the King’s Fund think tank, said: ‘The GP patient survey shows that despite the huge pressure on GPs at the beginning of the year, patients reported increased levels of satisfaction.’

However, she warned that GPs will face a ‘capacity crunch’ as ‘pent-up demand’ from patients who avoided making appointments.

She said: ‘The Government and NHS leaders need to consider how general practice will be supported to work with other NHS and care services to make sure that people continue to be able to access the care they need.’

It comes amid ongoing controversy over GP access, after NHS England issued guidance to practices in May that said GPs’ patients should be offered face-to-face appointments if that is their preference

The latest GP appointment figures demonstrated the ‘immense pressures’ GP practices are under, with practices in England carrying out 31.5 million recorded patient appointments in April.

The GP Partnership model is clearly failing and needs to be systematically dismantled stealthy and quickly

Who ever cares for an FFT or Mori poll? It’s free to 9 billion people. Like Pulse said, do enough, and enough is 60-70% for a pass mark I’d say. Then this circus of British buggery, believes in covert postal opinions of practices, and a right to say if a doctor listened to you, or you got an appointment with the person you wanted? Perverse at every level. ***Do the survey on dentists and state-funded bankers.

Is nobody concerned about the 20% of patients who did not have a good experience of their GP practice? Everybody should matter. Also what about the 1 in 3 who did not find it easy to get through to their practice by phone: sounds a bit troubling even in a pandemic, (especially in a pandemic?)

Nope. The pass mark is 60-70% Sam – you have a very long career ahead of you, if you need to please 100% of 9 billion potential people’s opinion (—- opinion is a very warped and perverse entitity, in this ego trolled selfish world) of a free, “come take what you want, cash and carry, who gives a t*ss, have it if you want it, there you go take it even through you never needed it” system. It’s not really a system anymore actually. It’s a juggernaut circus of trivial medicalisations and prancing around. Making up hypothetical stories, and permutations of organic disease under the veil of personality disorder, and Western drug centered care. A circus – packed full of magicians, masks, personalities, privilege and gimmicks. That 80% can easily switch on you, be careful.

Sam, even allowing for the fact you can never please 100% of people 100% of the time! Until we have appropriate capacity such as the promised 6k fte get used to the system being unfit for pandering to the demands of all and sundry. If you think there’s a hidden capacity in GP that can meet the deficit you are deluded! Admire your concerns, you need to focus on the villains who are scapegoating the beleaguered workforce!
