GP put forward for new BMA chair

The BMA has announced a shortlist of three doctors standing to succeed Dr Hamish Meldrum as its chairman, including GPC member Dr George Rae.

Dr Rae is up against Dr Mark Porter, chair of the BMA's consultants committee, and Professor Michael Rees, current co-chair of the Medical Academic Staff Committee at the BMA.

Dr Rae, a GP in Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear, is a member of BMA Council and GPC, and is also well known as a presenter of the BBC television series Street Doctor.

Dr Porter, a consultant obstetric anaesthetist at the University Hospital, Coventry, has been chair of the consultant's committee since 2009, while Professor Rees, professor of vascular studies at the University of Bangor, has been chair of Medical Academic Staff Committee since 2003.

Dr Meldrum will relinquish his chairmanship when his five-year term concludes at the end of this month's Annual Representatives' Meeting in Bournemouth.

The election of his successor will take place at a BMA Council meeting which to be held immediately after the ARM ends on Thursday 28 June.
