16. Professor Gillian Leng

Professor Leng runs NICE’s hugely influential clinical guidelines programme.

A visiting professor at King´s College London, she was involved in the Cochrane Collaboration as it first became established and specialised in public health medicine working as a consultant before joining NICE in 2001.

As director of evidence and practice she oversaw the launch of the commissioning outcomes framework that will eventually produce 150 quality indicators across five domains against which CCGs will be judged.

NICE’s clinical guidelines have been criticised for being based on studies that are not relevant to primary care, but are only likely to become more influential as CCGs face up to mounting financial pressures in the year ahead.
