Dr Louise Irvine was nominated by our panel for her work campaigning against the NHS reforms. As a prominent member of the Drop the Bill campaign, the GP from Lewisham in south-east London took her protest to the streets, joining a demonstration on Westminster Bridge and then calling for a boycott of commissioning as part of a concerted wave of anti-privatisation protests.
Dr Irvine's head-to-head confrontation last year with then-BMA chair Dr Hamish Meldrum over the association's stance on the health bill earned her a nomination for Pulse's True Champion of General Practice award, and this April she won a seat on BMA Council – a prominent position from which she looks set to continue campaigning.
