45. Dr Jonathon Tomlinson

Dr Jonathan Tomlinson comes in at number 45 in the 2013 Pulse Power 50. He is up four places from last year’s list.

Anti-privatisation blogger Dr Jonathon Tomlinson features in Pulse’s Power 50 for the second year running.

His colleagues told us that his well-read blog, A Better NHS, is ‘thoughtful’, ‘passionate’ and ‘inspiring’, and that Dr Tomlinson ‘stands up for the best aspects of general practice’. RCGP chair Professor Clare Gerada is known to be a fan – and in fact, this year Dr Tomlinson stood for election to RCGP Council, albeit unsuccessfully.

In the past 12 months, the focus of Dr Tomlinson’s writing has expanded beyond the NHS reforms and the threat of privatisation to more meditative pieces on the nature of the doctor-patient relationship. He continues to be a prolific tweeter under the @mellojonny moniker, and has doubled his followers in the past year to more than 6,000.

Off-line, Dr Tomlinson is a GP in Hackney, east London, and a campaigner for Keep Our NHS Public. Later this year he plans to step down from his role as an undergraduate tutor to take up an academic fellowship for two years.
