6 – Dr Richard Vautrey

GPC deputy chair Dr Richard Vautrey is a Yorkshireman with a droll, understated delivery and an unassuming but effective style of leadership. He has been at the forefront recently as lead negotiator on wide-ranging changes to the QOF.

Last year, 3rd, up-and-coming list

Widely respected for his straightforward approach, he will need every ounce of that political capital as he plays a key role in talks on commissioning and GP pensions. Dr Vautrey is among those GPs who believe the right way of making the best of the NHS reforms is to lead on them, and on his own patch – in Leeds – he chairs the local GP pathfinder consortium. He is also an RCGP council member and vice-president of the Methodist Council.

Dr Vautrey said: ‘The top priority this year must be to protect the NHS, our practices and our patients from the many potentially damaging parts of the health bill by pushing for significant amendments. In addition, a priority will be resisting further changes to our pension scheme.'
