Just 14% of asthma patients receiving ‘excellent’ care according to new report

Less than a fifth of patients with asthma are getting an annual review, a check of their inhaler technique and a written action plan, according to a report published today by Asthma UK.

During May and July this year almost 5,000 people with asthma completed a checklist of 10 aspects of asthma care- based on their responses their care was rates as being excellent, satisfactory or poor. Overall, just 14% were rated as receiving excellent care, 51% satisfactory and 35% poor.

Specifically 78% said they had their inhaler technique checked and 74% had a review of their asthma in the last year. But only 22% had been given a written action plan and only 18% were getting all three.
