Christopher Ecclestone, the ninth incarnation of the ‘Dr’ from the TV drama Dr Who, is one of several actors who are taking part in a charity event offering free medical role-play practice for trainee GPs.
The event, known as #Findtherightwords, aims to help trainee doctors who suffered a break in their training as a result of the Covid-19 crisis, get back on track and build confidence.
The ‘Dr’ will join forces with a host of other celebrity actors, including Holby City actors Luke Cunningham and Jo Martin, Outlander’s Steven Cree and Richard Rankin, and Coronation Street’s Nicola Thorp, to offer realistic patient/ doctor training scenarios.
The sessions, which run until 31 July , are free for trainee GPs and doctors and will take place over video link.
Doctors can practice role-playing medical scenarios or undertake Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA)/ Recorded Consultation Assessment (RCA) role-play covering shorter consultations with professional actors.
Participants can also sign up for masterclasses and webinars, offering video consultation skills, time management skills, and self-care consulting skills.
Avatar Jo, the company behind #findtherightwords described it as ‘a big hug of an event’ and stated the free training will ‘enable the actor community to say a big thank you to NHS trainee doctors’, as well as raising money for two charities, NHS Charities Together and Acting for Others.
Recent reports state there are record breaking numbers of trainee doctors currently being recruited into the NHS.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, GPs are able to complete their training via a Recorded Consultation Assessment that temporarily replaces the CSA exam.
