Alex Neil’s pledge this year to ‘reduce bureaucracy and paperwork for Scottish GPs’ puts him ahead of Mr Hunt in the esteem of the profession.  

He softened the blow of the mere 0.28% uplift to global sum funding by promising an extra £6m boost to the GP contract.

And he showed he is fighting GPs’ corner with calls for a review of the control of entry regulations for pharmacy to protect rural practices.
