21 – Professor Martin Marshall

Professor Martin Marshall, is one of the godfathers of the nGMS contract, helping draft the first version of the QOF along with Professor Martin Roland in 2004.

That's the role in which he will be most familiar to GPs, but Professor Marshall has also held a string of high-profile health policy roles, and has written over 130 publications on areas such as the measurement of quality and use of incentives.

He is currently director of clinical quality at the Health Foundation, an independent healthcare charity, but before that, he's been – deep breath – deputy Chief Medical Officer, professor of general practice at the University of Manchester, DH director general of clinical quality, safety and medical education, chair of the RCGP ethics committee and a commissioner at the Care Quality Commission.

He also practices part-time as a GP in Lambeth, south London.
