Independents' Day

GPs will be asked to open over Easter to help with coronavirus 'peak'

GP practices in England will be asked to open over the Easter Bank Holiday to help the NHS cope with the coronavirus crisis.

This comes as NHS England expects infections from the virus to peak over the period.

The BMA told members that 'emergency changes to GMS contract regulations are being made which are likely to lead to practices being required to be open on Good Friday and Easter Monday'

It said this comes 'as it is expected that this bank holiday period will coincide with a peak in activity'.

They added: 'We are working with NHSE/I on the details of this and will provide more information as soon as possible.'

  • What are the odds that these 'emergency powers' will be used to make us all salaried. HMG seem to have a blank cheque book at the moment to buy people out of their property. I've heard that the Jersey Government has just made all GP's salaried over there on 130k each. I know it's a part private system but they are still independent contractors, or were...!

  • so are the BMA actually going to do their job and advocate for US?

GP surgeries shouldnt be open - you need more OOH and I think if this is funded properly - mr sunak has found a magic money tree after all - then itll be ok.

  • I'm not really sure what we're being asked to do. We've really got no role in the assessment of covid patients - either stay at home or 111/999 if you can't cope.

    What can we add?

  • What for exactly?

We aren't going to see any potential Covid patients without proper PPE and poorly fitting masks with flimsy aprons are no protection

  • As above, GPs have no role in the assessment of potentially lethal Covid 19 cases, particularly in the absence of adequate protection. Over to you, BMA.
