#GPnews: March was worst month for A&E targets since they begun

15:40 Elsewhere today, it has emerged that another GP practice in North Wales has announced that it will close due to an ‘increased workload’ – the sixth since the end of 2015, the BBC reports

Conwy’s Llys Meddyg practice is set to terminate its contract with the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) in October, claiming that its GPs had been working 12-hour days to cope with an increased workload.

The practice said it had failed to recruit a new GP, leaving it no choice but close.

12:00 The Labour Party has declared today to be ‘Black Thursday’ for the NHS, after A&E figures showed March was the worst ever month for meeting the four hour target.

It produced a table revealing the poor performance in March:

Heidi Alexander, shadow health secretary, said: ’This is Black Thursday for the NHS. These figures show an NHS in constant crisis and there appears to be no sign of things getting any better.

’The reality is that this deepening crisis is a direct result of the Tories’ failed policies. People are finding it harder to see their GP and cuts to social care have left hundreds of thousands of older people without the support they need to live at home independently. This is leaving many people with no choice but to go to A&E.’

It has also been featured in the Guardian, the Mail, the Times and the BBC.

9:30 NHS England has released its cancer strategy, which has outlined plans to diagnose cancer within 28 days of GP referral.

The £15m pledge is designed to save 300,000 lives a year by 2020. We’ll have more on that later.
