General Practice Awards: GP of the Year shortlist 2025

The finalists have been announced for the ‘General Practitioner of the Year’ category at this year’s General Practice Awards.

The GP of the Year award is always a highly contested category and our judges had a very hard time whittling the very impressive nominees down to a shortlist of nine.

The GP Awards 2025 will take place on 5 December 2025 at the Novotel London West in Hammersmith.

Anyone wishing to attend the Awards Ceremony can book their tickets here.

The GP finalists for 2025 are:

Dr. Kirsty Cole MBE in Orkney. She established the area’s first Practice Based Small Group Learning group, and leading medical training in the voluntary sector. Her leadership and advocacy for rural care saw her recent appointment as an MBE for services to general practice and the community in Orkney.

Dr Ishi Bains in Tower Hamlets. She has improved access to care, reduced waiting times and enhanced continuity of care through creation of an integrated women’s health hub in the area. She has also worked to break down barriers between primary and secondary care to create more efficient and patient-centred services.

Dr Balraj Mavi in Dudley. As PCN clinical director, he has reduced health inequalities and improved management of long-term conditions. He also championed access by embedding pharmacists and paramedics in the team and developing EMIS-based clinical navigation tools.

Dr Ballal Seddique in Tower Hamlets. They recognised variation in staff training for emergency preparedness, and so completed BLS and ILS/PILS instructor courses to design programmes for teams across primary care, schools, and community settings. Their efforts improved clinical skills and boosted the confidence in managing emergencies.

Dr Lucie Donlan in Manchester. A partner for 17 years in a socially-deprived inner city area, she is interested in the impact of adverse childhood events and psychological trauma on patient’s health. She has worked with the council and led on training practices across the area to develop trauma-informed approaches to care.

Dr Elango Vijaykumar in Surrey. He led a complex three-practice merger integrating, systems, aligning teams and introducing digital access improvements. A passionate advocate for equitable care, he also led his PCN to deliver annual health checks for 99.5% of patients with learning disabilities.

Dr Helen Kingston in Somerset. She has long been a champion of innovations in health coaching, peer-led support and more which have since been adopted more widely across the NHS. In particular, her work in tackling loneliness and developing social prescribing models has received both national and international recognition.

Dr Zoyah Hussain in Yorkshire. She identified a critical public health issue in her area – a historically low childhood immunisation uptake – and led the creation of a community-powered model which increased DTP and MMR uptake, as well as pre-school boosters. The model serves as a template for the wider area to tackle immunisation inequalities.

Dr Henry Chan in Cheshire. He led the charge to redesign healthcare services for patients with cardio renal metabolic conditions in his area, which will set a precedent for other PCNs – not only in dealing with CRM, but across other multiple long term health issues.

The General Practice Awards – organised by Pulse’s publisher Cogora – are a celebration of excellence and expertise in primary care across the UK.

There are also awards for ‘Future leader in general practice’, ‘General Practice Team of the Year’, as well as accolades celebrating excellence in sustainability, public health & prevention and digital innovation.

At the 2024 ceremony, Dr Mark Gaffney was crowned GP of the year for his work in planning and delivering the merger of four practices, as well as setting up the OOH and local ‘hospice at home’ services in his area.

Liverpool Homeless Palliative Care Multidisciplinary Team won General Practice Team of the Year, for their work treating and caring for patients experiencing homelessness at the end of their life in Liverpool.
