Babies fighting for their lives, cash pocketed from selling hospitals and young people with memory loss

One baby has died and 14 other are fighting for their lives with blood poisoning in NHS neonatal units, the suspected cause an infected drip.

The story, which is the splash on the Telegraph, is accompanied by other bad news.

Companies are making a quick buck by selling off hospitals built with financial investments from private interests, with the Public Accounts Committee describing the huge profits as a ‘scandal’.

According to the exclusive front-page story of the Independent, contractors have ‘pocketed millions of pounds’ in the past four years from the controversial private finance initiative (PFI) schemes.

Only the Daily Express brings some good news. Its splash says there is ‘a simple way’ to fight dementia’ – to lead a healthier lifestyle. Unfortunately, it is a bit of a positive twist on a piece of not so good news, as US researchers conclude that being unhealthy causes memory loss even in young adults who are obese, have high blood pressure or are depressed.

Dr Simon Ridley, Head of Research at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: ‘Anyone who is concerned that they may be depressed or are worried about their lifestyle should consult their GP.’
