GP wins award for pioneering community project

A GP who has developed a community-based solution to unemployment and isolation was the winner of the General Practitioner of the Year 2013 award, held in London last night.

Dr James Fleming – from the Padiham Medical Centre in East Lancashire - set up the ‘Green Dreams’ project, which links project managers to individual GP practices, who spend time with each patient to define the barriers to enhanced quality of life. It has grown from just one practice to nine across East Lancashire, in six towns.

The General Practice Awards – held by Pulse’s parent company, Cogora – are intended to reward practitioners and staff who have excelled this year.

The Commissioners of the Year award was presented to Durham Dales Health for its scheme aimed to tackle and improve COPD care in their area, which has the seventh highest COPD population in England.

Victoria Vaughan, editor-in-chief of Nursing in Practice, Management in Practice and The Commissioning Review, said: ‘These awards aim to celebrate the good work you do every day, innovating in effective patient care in what has been a tough year for the reputation of NHS staff.’

‘So much is being asked of you as a result of the Health Bill and the recent GP contract changes. We hope these awards go some way to making you feel it’s all worth it.’
