#GPnews: Hunt praises Theresa May’s ‘bravery’

14:00 The health secretary has praised Prime Minister Theresa May’s ‘bravery’ during her conference speech. Speaking on Radio 4’s World at One, he said he hopes the public will associate with the PM’s difficulties as they ‘go to work with coughs and colds but they don’t do it with the eyes of the world on them’.

The prime minister ‘came across as very human, perhaps not in the way she hoped’, he added.

3:20 Pretty much the only thing social media is talking about right now is that speech. Quite a few twitter users making the link to general practice…

09:50 The health secretary Jeremy Hunt has been blasted by rival MPs for making the ’laughable’ claim in his speech at the Conservative Party Conference, that ’setting up’ the NHS was down to the Conservatives.

Mr Hunt said the idea came from a white paper by Conservative Sir Henry Willink four years before the NHS was founded by Labour’s then health minister, Nye Bevan, in 1948.

But shadow health secretary Jonathon Ashworth said:  ‘Jeremy Hunt’s claim the Tories created the NHS is laughable’.

Mr Ashworth said the Conservatives fought ’tooth and nail all the way through Parliament’ and, in Government, have ’consistently underfunded’ the service.

And the Independent reports Liberal Democrat MP Christine Jardine saying if Mr Hunt was serious about working across parties to protect the NHS then he should ’put his money where his mouth is and launch an cross-party convention’ on health and care.
