Professor Amanda Howe comes in at number 44 in the 2013 Pulse Power 50. She has risen nine places from last year’s list.
Chair-elect of international GP group WONCA and newly elected vice-chair of the RCGP, Professor Amanda Howe has gone from strength to strength this year.
She has been integral behind the scenes at the RCGP, writing a report into generalism that spawned the 10-year strategy recently published by the college. She was described as a ‘role model for feminists’ by her nominators this year, and earned praise for her ‘amazing mind and dedication to research’.
She hit the headlines in 2012 when her research uncovered that fewer than a quarter of NICE recommendations for GPs are based on studies that are relevant to primary care.
She spoke out against the DH’s plans to ‘improve choice’ in the NHS - something she called ‘meaningless’. Professor Howe also covered the workforce crisis for Pulse last March when she argued that the profession had a duty to deal with its image problem in medical schools if it wanted to attract more, and better quality, trainees.
Professor Howe is also a lecturer and professor of primary care at the University of East Anglia and a sessional GP in Norwich.
