42. Dr Peter Holden

Dr Peter Holden comes in at number 42 in the 2013 Pulse Power 50. He has fallen nine places from last year’s list.

Dr Peter Holden is entering his 15th year on the GPC negotiating team and there is no sign of him slowing down.

Following the departure of Dr Laurence Buckman as GPC chair, Dr Holden is the last remaining member of the team that secured the new GMS contract in 2004.

A GP in Matlock, Derbyshire, he is also an expert in emergency medicine - a member of the medical aircrew with the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance based at RAF Waddington. Dr Holden was one of the first on the scene when one of the 7/7 bombs destroyed a bus outside BMA House on Tavistock Square in 2005.

Admired by our panel for his ‘honest and straight-to-the-point views’, Dr Holden is also a master of the pithy put-down. Condemning the Government’s record on GP premises earlier this year, he told Pulse: ‘If the health secretary doesn’t hot-desk, I’m damned if I will.’
