The ultimate holder of the NHS purse strings, Mr Cameron kept the health service at arm’s length since getting badly burnt over his Government’s health reforms.

That has changed this year.

He made seven-day, 8 ‘til 8 opening of GP practices one of his flagship policies at last year’s party conference and with Labour sharpening its knives over the Government’s handing of the NHS, we can expect a more interventionist style leading up to the election next year.
