Chemotherapy preferred in surgeries over hospital

Cancer patients show a clear preference to being treated at their local surgery or at home over hospital according to a study published today.

Researchers at the Oncology Centre at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge randomised 97 patients needing chemo to delivered in the hospital day unit, at the patient's home or in their local GP surgery.

The primary outcome was patient-perceived benefits and - although 78% of patients expressed satisfaction with their treatment whatever their location - 57% preferred future treatment to continue at the hospital, 81% at GP surgeries and 90% at home.

The study is published today in the British Journal of Cancer.
