Third of patients on levothyroxine taking it for no reason, claim UK researchers

A growing number of UK patients witth subclinical hypothyroidism are being prescribed levothyroxine with around a third of patients taking the drug for no reason.

Researchers at Cardif University looked at UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink records for over 50,000 patients and found a 30% increase in the likelihood of treatment being started at TSH levels below 10.0 mIU/l.
