12 – Professor Martin Roland

Professor Martin Roland, former director of the National Primary Care Research and Development Centre and now professor of health services research at the University of Cambridge, has played a pivotal role in some of the most fundamental parts of recent primary care policy.

Down 1

A GP in Cambridge, he helped draw up the new GMS contract in 2004, worked on the expert panel that decided clinical QOF indicators before the responsibility was handed to NICE, and was an adviser to the DH and Ipsos MORI on the GP Patient Survey.

His standing as one of the UK's most respected primary care academics has been aided by his willingness to speak out when he sees his policy advice misinterpreted or ignored – as with his warnings over schemes to cut admissions and his highly critical analysis of the Government's NHS reforms.
