Vulnerable patients in Bolton have had their lives improved by the actions of Dr Hafeez. He has recently introduced a self-harm register to improve medicines compliance and offer support to patients in an area of high drug abuse, alcoholism and depression.

Dr Hafeez is a member of the Public Health England’s Greater Manchester Migrant Health Task Group, which makes strategies to improve public health awareness of hepatitis and screening among high-risk groups, especially migrants.

Leading by example, he held an open day at his surgery last July to mark World Hepatitis Day and offer free screening: 30% of patients at the surgery are Asian and another 30% Eastern Europeans, two high-risk groups. The event was covered by two Asian TV channels.

Dr Hafeez has also had an impact at a national level this year. As an active member of the GMC’s BME Doctors’ Forum, he challenged the GMC to be more transparent and engage directly with doctors. He also added pressure on the GMC to request that all royal colleges share their exam pass rates based on ethnicity of doctors; it did so.

He also works as a media medic, providing specific outreach to BME patients for stations including BBC Radio 5 live. Earlier this year he ran a patient education session at a local mosque for diabetics who wanted to fast during Ramadan, which had excellent feedback from participants. He has also helped set up a mobile healthcare unit in rural Pakistan that serves 100,000 people.

What he says ‘My favourite moment from the past 12 months was the launch of the mobile health clinic project as it is life-changing for deprived communities in remote areas’

What others say ‘Dr Hafeez is a true role model in his profession’
