The doctor settled in front of his computer. In front of him, laid out on his desk, illuminated by the subtle light of his bankers’ lamp, were several significant event analyses. They were handwritten, in neat, meticulous black ink. There was a subtlety to his prose and in each he had managed to delve to the core of the case. He had suggested change and with his drive and leadership had implemented that change for the benefit of his patients. His audit, prepared several months beforehand was well thought out and constructed, it was relevant and had led to a battery of research ideas. His annual appraiser had never seen such a glowing raft of positive feedback. He had thank you letters and cards from his elderly patients and generous compliments from his colleagues. His practice was evidence-based, well documented and transparent. The Royal College would call him a good egg and a shining example to the more recalcitrant and sceptical colleagues. Pleased with himself, the kindly Dr Shipman switched off his desk lamp and picking up his bag, rattling with morphine vials, he left for his evening rounds. Kev
