But do antipyretics like Calpol (or non-brand alternatives) do any good? Do they significantly reduce fever, reduce the duration of illness, or make the patient feel more comfortable?

Or do they just make the doctor and patient feel that they are doing something (which they can pretend is useful)? Peter English

I'm pretty sure they do good. I remember during my paeds job, parents would bring in their febrile kids sans antipyretic, 'so you can see ho bad he is.' The kid would look like death warmed up (excuse the pun) but 1/2 hour after paracetamol would be running round the waiting room and we would breathe a sigh of relief. L Godwin

The scary thing is that one risks missing the truly sick child amongst the barrage of cough and cold presentations
