A ban on referrals insults and patronises GP locums and leaves partners in the lurch

06 Dec 2011
Dr Diana Smallwood wonders, if you’re going to tell locums they can’t refer, what’s the point of using them at all?

I do agree with Dr Smallwood that many locum GPs are very experienced and fully
competent to make a decision while referring. Equally there are young doctors who are working as a locum , as they are unable to join as a partner in a practice. These
doctors are highly trained, and many practices are fortunate to have them in their practices. I would say, that if the locums are deterred from referring , it could bring
disastrous effects to the patient and the practice.
I don't think that the GMC would look at it differently , as the case is being referred
by the locum or he or she fails to refer the patient appropriately.
May be the GPs should do some locum work in other practices to feel
how difficult it is not to refer a patient.

Greedy partners are not ready to let go off the golden pot and usually exploit locums and salaried doctors. Some of them are earning more than 1,50,000 a year and want to give around 72,000 to their colleagues who may be more qualified. This is disgraceful behaviour. Some partners retire only after they die.Young GPs are infact often happy when this happens as Government does not seem to do anything to retire these tired and about to expire war horses.
