RCGP appoints new revalidation lead

The RCGP has appointed Professor Nigel Sparrow as its new medical director of revalidation.

Professor Sparrow, a GP in Nottingham, has chaired the RCGP's professional development board for the past five years, where he has led on the development of the College's CPD strategy to support the revalidation process.

He succeeds new RCGP president Professor Mike Pringle in the role, and will take up the post on 1 October.

Professor Sparrow said: I will continue to work to make revalidation practical for all GPs and aim to ensure consistency of appraisal and revalidation across the profession.'

The College recently published Version 7 of the RCGP Guide to Revalidation, to advise GPs on how revalidation will work and how they should be preparing for the process, which is due to start in December 2012 subject to health secretary activating the necessary legislation.

Responsible officers and GP leaders are due to be the first to through the process, with GPs due to learn by December when they will be revalidated.
