Dr Kartik Modha comes in at number 14 in the 2013 Pulse Power 50 - a new entry.

Many of general practice’s power players use social media, but Dr Kartik Modha takes online influence to a whole new level.

Founder of the 2,200-strong Facebook community ‘Tiko’s GP Group’, his GP peers praised the network both for its clinical and non-clinical resources.

Dr Modha was working as a part-time out-of-hours GP in Kentish Town, London, when he had the idea to link GPs up online to share news and resources. He founded the group in June 2011, and within the last 12 months the group has doubled in size - one of his greatest achievements this year, he reported.

Dr Modha says: ‘If people make virtual bonds online and then meet, this reinforces a positive relationship in real life, creating links and bonds between GPs in different CCGs. It’s important to see that this is the way forward.’

His aim for the next 12 months is to develop a template for seeking informed patient consent in order for GPs to discuss complex cases with other GPs online. He’s currently working with RCGP medical director of curriculum Dr Ben Riley and hopes to get approval from the BMA and GMC for the final document.

Dr Modha has also co-founded a search engine for patients and GPs seeking good private consultants, called myhealthspecialist.com, which launched last January. He aims to have 1,000 specialists and GPs respectively registered to the site by the end of 2015.

He shared his social media expertise with readers earlier this year during a session at the Pulse Live conference and sits on the advisory board for the event.

Dr Modha currently works as a GP locum in out-of-hours and urgent care in north London.
