46. Dr Stephen Carty

Dr Stephen Carty comes in at number 46 in the 2013 Pulse Power 50. He is a new entry in the list.

As medical adviser to the Black Triangle Campaign – the group that last month warned LMCs it was planning legal action over advice for GPs to refuse benefits requests – Edinburgh GP Dr Stephen Carty has been a vocal, if controversial, campaigner on behalf of claimants.

He is proudest of his achievement in lobbying the BMA to call for the work capability assessment to be scrapped – but intends to redouble his campaigning efforts in the coming months.

Alongside another charity, Disabled People Against Cuts, the BTC announced in September it was planning legal action against the LMCs who advise GPs to refuse requests for support from benefit claimants

Dr Carty says one of his greatest achievements this year was to inform BMA policy calling for the Work Capability Assessment to be scrapped, but one of the greatest challenges for the next year was to press the BMA and LMCs to distribute information on ‘substantial risk’ regulations: ‘After two years of repeated attempts to engage with the BMA they have finally agreed to send delegates to Edinburgh to meet to discuss our concerns. But it remains a matter of grave concern that nothing material has changed yet and avoidable harm continues.’
