Dr Laura Edwards

A sessional GP, chair of the BMA’s Junior Members’ Forum and medical director of Wessex LMCs, Dr Laura Edwards likes to get involved in the ‘complex landscape beyond the surgery door’.

According to our panel, she is ‘highly intelligent with good leadership skills’. Appointed as a medical director at a young age, she has ‘huge potential and is clearly one to watch’.

Dr Edwards practises near Southampton and says that encouraging GP trainees to get involved is the most satisfying part of her LMC work. She also enjoys trying to inspire people that management is interesting and gives you ‘a real opportunity to communicate and influence at a population level’.

And she is passionate about general practice: ‘I fiercely believe that general practice is the way to save the NHS – we are so cost effective. But general practice and the workforce in and around primary care need to be valued by the system, the Government and the public for the incredibly responsible work they do. I don’t think people realise how many GPs wake in the night and worry about their patients.’
