British Society for HF advice on shielding, and who to prioritise for review

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NO LONGER RELEVANT AND IS NOT BEING UPDATED BUT HAS BEEN LEFT ON THE SITE FOR REFERENCE PURPOSES ONLY

This information is sourced from the British Society for Heart Failure (BSH):

Shielding:

  • Consider shielding for those symptomatic patients at highest risk, including those with an NT-proBNP of >2000pg/ml

Patients to be considered for secondary care review:

  • New referrals of symptomatic patients with NTproBNP >2000 pg/ml from primary care or recent A&E attendance
  • Known HF patients with symptoms of decompensation
  • Recently discharged patients following admission with acute heart failure
  • Patients with advanced care plans and receiving palliative care in the community

BSH propose that provision should include as a minimum:

  • Access to essential phlebotomy services
  • NTproBNP/BNP for those with possible new diagnosis of HF
  • Specialist advice lines for patients and health care professionals
  • Timely face to face review in appropriate environment
  • Advanced care planning in conjunction with palliative care
